Yesterday, on Wednesday23 October 2013, a gang of thieves opened fire on policemen guarding and some bank officials, in an attempt to hijack a bullion van which was transferring money from an unnamed bank.
According to Nigerian Tribune;
A member of a robbery gang was, on Wednesday, killed, with four people, including an official of the Nigerian Navy, shot in Apapa area of Lagos State, as robbers went on the rampage.
Many people were also reportedly injured as a result of the ensuing gun duel between the robbers and policemen.
The robbers, who operated on power bikes, created confusion on Mobil Road in Apapa and many other parts of the industrial community.
An injured member of the gang was arrested by policemen from Area B police command, who stormed the area to resist the robbers.
The robbery gang was reportedly trying to hijack a bullion van, which was transferring money from the Apapa branch of an unnamed bank when the incident happened.
Nigerian Tribune gathered that the bullion van was on Mobil Road when the robbers opened fire on policemen and bank officials in the vehicle.
The development prompted the reinforcement from the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Apapa Division, Usman Ndambabo, who ordered his men to storm the area.
A fierce gun battle ensued between the policemen and the robbers, who were said to be prepared and armed for the operation.
The encounter, which lasted for over 30 minutes, led to the death of one of the robbers, while a naval officer and four others were hit by bullets.
An eyewitness, who spoke with the Nigerian Tribune under condition of anonymity, said it was like a war scene, adding that at the end, the police carried away some people suspected to have been killed in the gun battle.
