TRIBUNE -Police detectives in Enugu State, on Thursday, foiled attempt by members of the Biafra Zionists Federation (BZF) to overrun the Enugu State Broadcasting Service (ESBS) and declare an independent state of Biafra.

Two persons, including a police officer were reported dead, while an Inspector of Police was wounded during an exchange of fire between the security operatives and the separatists.

The invasion by the pro-Biafra group, led by a London-trained lawyer, Benjamin Onwuka, was repelled by the security operatives, who stormed the radio premises with a four-man team.

It was learnt that the Zionists took to their heels after being overpowered by the security operatives who shot sporadically in the studio to dislodge invaders.

An eyewitness said two members, including the self-acclaimed leader of the group, Onwuka, was arrested by the police, while some passersby were also arrested for interrogation.

“Onwuka’s mission to the state television house was to make a live broadcast, having declared himself leader of the new Biafran Republic last year,” a source revealed.

The group had claimed responsibility for the invasion of the Enugu State Government House in March, during which some guards were injured. The police at the time arrested and arraigned five members of the group, who were being remanded in Enugu prison.

Consequently, the police later declared Onwuka and his members wanted, but none of them was arrested until the invasion of the state-owned radio station.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ebere Amaraizu, said he was still collating details on the matter, saying he would definitely brief the press formally as soon as possible.
