Nelson Mandela is said to be in a serious condition after he was admitted to hospital to be treated for a recurring lung infection.
Details of his health have been scarce since he was rushed to a private hospital in Pretoria in the middle of the night however, government spokesman Mac Maharaj said his condition was “serious this time” but Mr Mandela was “able to breathe on his own” and was “communicating” with relatives.
A statement from the office of President Jacob Zuma said: “During the past few days, former President Nelson Mandela has had a recurrence of lung infection.”
“This morning at about 1.30am, his condition deteriorated and he was transferred to a Pretoria hospital. He remains in a serious but stable condition.”
We wish Madiba speedy recovery.
