The choosing of an Emir of Kano

The news that a new Emir of Kano will be chosen today Sunday, was disclosed by Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of Kano State shortly after he received the four Kano kingmakers, who visited him at the Government House yesterday.

It has been reported that the kingmakers, comprising Makaman Kano (Alhaji Abdullahi Sarki Ibrahim), Sarkin Dawaki Mai Tuta (Alhaji Bello Abubakar), Madakin Kano (Alhaji Yusuf Nabahali) and Sarkin Bai (Alhaji Muktar Adnan), held a closed-door meeting with the governor.

To chose a new Emir, the kingmakers will screen the names of all contenders to the throne, and select three out of them to pass to the Kano State governor for final approval. The governor will now choose one out of the three for the throne. All three contenders must have a 3-1 votes from the four kingmakers, in the case of a 2-2 tie from the four king makers, the Wazirin Kano will be invited to take a counting vote.

Some of the contenders have been rumored to include  Lamido Sanusi Ado Bayero (Ciroman Kano), Nasiru Ado Bayero (Turakin Kano), Abbas Sunusi (Wamban Kano) and Tijjani Hashim (Galadiman Kano).

As it was done in the case of the Late Ado Bayero who was out of the country when he was chosen as the new emir in 1963, the kingmakers may exercise the power to choose from the Ibrahim Dabo Dynasty even if the person does not signify interest in the throne.

The former Emir of Kano Ado Bayero, died on Friday after ruling for 50 years.
