NUJ Chairman Alex Akinwale dies in car crash
At about 10.20am on Saturday, 1st February 2014, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), NTA Chapel, Mr. Alex Akinwale, his prenant wife, Rebecca, daughter, Paulina, son, Paul, and their house-help were involved in multiple car accident.
According to eye witness report, a vehicle conveying a traditional ruler, the Osunmakinde of Ife Tuntun, Oba Obawure Taofeek Olaposi, had been recklessly overtaking vehicles along the road at Aponmu Village on Akure-Ondo Road when it collided into Chairman Akinwales’ vehicle and the Deputy Governor of Ondo State’s convoy.
Although no harm came to the Deputy Governor and members of his convoy, the monarch sustained injuries in the accident and was hospitalised at Specialist Hospital in Akure while a teenage girl said to be in his car and his driver died on the way to the hospital.
The Akinwales and their house-help died however, died in the accident. Only Paul survived the accident and was rushed to the Accident and Trauma Centre, Ondo Town.
