Victoria Falls is a small border town with a population of about 50,000 people but thanks to the “Victoria Falls” (which is the same name as the town), it attracts quite a number of visitors both locally and internationally day in, day out.
I would refer to it as a perfect tourist town because it has tons of activities fit for a Tourist or Traveler (Apparently, there’s a difference and I just learnt about it…Nonsense). If you ever think of planning a trip to this charming little town and you have no clue on what to do when you get there, Here is my list of 10 things to do in Victoria Falls:
Dine At The Boma
This is a must do in Victoria Falls. Dining at the Boma was an awesome experience. You get to taste all sorts of game meat while you enjoy entertainment by different performance troops. Make sure you join in in the drumming extravaganza which was absolutely fun.
Spend An Afternoon At The Victoria Falls Bridge
Enjoy viewing the Falls from the Victoria Falls Bridge as you walk freely between two countries without any hassles. The bridge is also the site for the Victoria Falls Bungee shared by both countries. You’ll also get a view of the Victoria Falls Hotel from the bridge.
Visit The Falls
This is definitely a must. I mean you can’t come all the way to Victoria Falls and not see “Victoria Falls” or Mosi-oa-tunya (the thunder that crashes) as the local people call it. Get drenched from the spread of the falls as you take a walk by the lined pathway, stopping at different observation points to get a better view of the falls.
Take A Helicopter Ride Over The Falls
You can go on a helicopter ride to see stunning ariel views of the falls. The ride lasts about 12 minutes and the helicopter circles the falls a couple of times so that all passengers can get good view of the falls. You also get to see some animals as the Victoria falls and Zambezi national parks are also visible from above. I was lucky to spot some Hippos and Impalas while on my ride and the views were amazing!
Cage Dive With Crocodiles
If you’re up to the task, head over to the Cage diving place and get wet with 3 huge Nile Crocodiles. Hopefully you get to enjoy the whole experience unlike mine where there was an incident with someone in the cage who freaked out and had a panic attack so we had to truncate the activity (so upsetting). I met a lady on the plane back to Harare who also did the cage dive and she had a chance to touch the crocodile’s belly. Pretty cool!
A number of companies offer this service if you are keen on seeing some wildlife. You get to see several wild animals including the big five at Zambezi National park while riding in a 4×4 vehicle.
This is one thrilling experience I’ll never forget. If you are willing to take the risk (which I’m always open to), head over to Lion Encounter and spend an hour walking with Lions. You’ll get a chance to touch them as well which is pretty awesome (I mean how often do you get to come close to a Lion let alone touch it).
I thought this could only be done in places like Thailand or Sri Lanka but remember we also have Elephants in Africa. Follow trails lined around the Zambezi as you ride on the back of an Elephant learning more about these huge but gentle creatures.
If you love extreme sports and adventure, welcome home. Victoria Falls has a series of adventure sports activities that will get your adrenaline pumping more than you desire. There are tons of extreme sports you can delve into from Bungee Jumping to River rafting, Gorge swing to Kayaking, whichever one you settle for, you won’t be underwhelmed.
Sunset Cruise On Zambezi
What better way to end a day than to take the sunset cruise over Zambezi. You get to see stunning sunset views and a couple of animals that live on the Zambezi river. We were lucky enough to spot crocodiles and Hippos while on the cruise and seeing them in their natural habitat was an interesting sight. Refreshments are served on the cruise so all you need do is relax and enjoy the ride which lasts for about an hour and half.
